Response to Literature
Alec Mackenzie is a dynamic character in the book Forbidden, written by Syrie James and Ryan M. James. This story is set in an average High school, one of which Claire Brennan attends. Lately, Claire has been having physic visions, and has no idea why. Alec chose Emerson High School as a place to get away from his abnormal life as a guardian Angel. Little did he know Claire was one of the immortals he had to be protection for. Even though its Forbidden, they both can't deny their undying love for each other. Alec Mackenzie inspires the reader through his protective, unique, and loving personality.
Alec takes the readers' breath away with his protective quality. When Claire left school early, Alec knew something was wrong, so he went after her to insure her safety. Regardless of the time, setting, or situation, Alec is always there to protect Claire. He has no hesitation- whenever something seems strange, it is his complete instinct to make sure nobody (especially Claire) is in danger. Additionally, when Claire started asking Alec questions, he simply replied with "Because... I might not be here to protect you the next time." He doesn't feel the need to answer questions, all he wants Claire to know is he might not be there the next time. Alec is so caught up in being a protector, he fears there will be a time he won't be. His protectiveness automatically makes everyone drawn to him.
Alec's unique trait significantly intrigues the reader. The story says "Claire couldn't tell if he was stuck up, rude, or just uncomfortable being the center of attention." Alec’s personality is hard to read at first- although he is kind and sweet, he may come across as something different. He has so many different qualities that all create an amazing personality that's hard to find. Also, Alec is a descendant of an angel. This is very unique because only 1 out of every 900,000 people are an angel/protector. He is always doing and saying strange things because he isn't used to being around humans. Alec is so incredibly unique that sometimes, the strange things he does makes you chuckle.
Alec charms the reader through his loving heart. When construction went wrong and a building almost fell on Claire, Alec risked revealing who he truly was so he could save her life. He is so loving and generous that he would put himself in danger, and possibly everyone of his kind, to save a life. Nothing for Alec is too extreme- anything for the one he loves is worth it. Likewise, in the book, it states "He hoped she couldn't tell how fast his heart was beating, or guess the effect she had on him." Alec is so sweet that just looking at Claire makes him feel nervous. He knows his love for Claire shines right through him, yet he hopes she can't tell because its forbidden.
Lastly, Alec's protective, unique, and loving personality inspires the reader page after page. Not only are his qualities great, but they all come together, creating a dynamic character that you'll never forget. The author makes you wish he'd jump off the page, so you could really be with someone so amazing. Alec Mackenzie's beautiful heart shines bright- creating a character that is truly inspirational.
Reflection
For this writing assignment, we were required to pick a main character from our novels, pick 3 of their most inspirational character traits, then supply evidence for these traits. This assignment helped me to understand how to pick one topic, then analyze it in depth. I found it interesting that a character that doesn't even exist can have so much personality and life. I think that I chose three great character traits, that were very inspirational. I could improve by using a wider vocabulary, and using more difficult words. I can connect this assignment to the arts because writers do this as well. They pick a topic or storyline, then thoroughly go woth that topic and write a novel.
